There is a concern that disinfection byproducts (DBPs) produced in wastewater effluent may adversely impact the downstream aquatic system and drinking water resources. It is thus imperative to understand the occurrence, fate, transport, and removal of DBPs and DBP precursors to allow further wastewater reuse practices. This work contributed to this topic with the following efforts: 1) a nation-wide survey of the occurrences of many disinfection byproducts, 2) a comparison of the DBP formation potentials of effluent and natural organic matter, termed as dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen, 3) an evaluation of the effects of natural processes, i.e., hydrolysis, photolysis, biodegradation, volatilization, and adsorption, on reducing DBPs from surface waters, and 4) an assessment of conventional water treatment processes in removing DBP precursors. The results indicated the importance of wastewater effluent as a source of many DBPs, highlighted the role of organic nitrogen in forming nitrogenous DBPs, discovered the specificity of natural mechanisms in mitigating DBPs, and identified the deficiency of conventional treatment processes in respond to potential wastewater impact.

In radiation therapy for adenocarcinoma of the prostate, an arbitrary high dose to the prostate gland is limited by toxicity to the neighboring tissues namely to the urethra, the rectum, and bladder. Rectal toxicity has been directly correlated with the dose received by the rectal walls. In addition to acting principally as an immobilization device, an endo-rectal balloon may serve to reduce radiation the dose to the rectal wall. The volume of the rectal wall that receives a high radiation dose is reduced by forcing the posterior wall away from the target. In this work, point dose measurements were collected using a commercial PN-junction diode detector and electrometer using a standard radiation therapy calibration protocol. Measurements were made in an acrylic, water-filled phantom with a designed geometry that simulates a rectal cavity, prostate gland, and bladder. For comparison, predicted dosimetry was derived using CT-based treatment planning employing the Xio radiation therapy treatment planning system which uses a radiation transport model based on the collapsed cone convolution algorithm.

Understanding colloid fate and transport in porous medium not only permits more effective protection of water supplies, but also allows for the development of more effective pollutant remediation strategies. Organic matter (OM) complicates colloid behaviour. To date the influence of OM on colloid mobility in porous media has been largely qualitative. This book presents research leading to the development of multiple-pulse column techniques that may be integrated with mathematical models to quantify the effects of OM on particulate colloid attenuation in saturated porous medium. Research has investigated how two groups of environmental organic compounds, humic acids and proteins, influence particulate colloid attenuation by saturated sand. Study findings may shed light on complex colloidal behaviour in organic matter impacted environment and be useful to professionals in contaminant hydrogeology, environmental remediation, and wastewater treatment.
